Shehan and Sophie's Lush Auckland Wedding
Hey there wonderful wedding lovers! I'm so happy to share this beautiful wedding with you today. You might remember Sophie from Peace Out Anxiety, who shared her wedding planning story with us last year. Today I'm finally sharing her wedding with you all!
Sophie is a fashion designer and Shehan works in IT Design. They met online and got engaged in 2015. I'll let Sophie tell you all about how Shehan proposed! Shehan and I knew pretty early on that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together and get married. Shehan proposed to me in Auckland. Suprising me with a huge bunch of peonies the night before, he picked my up the next morning for breakfast and we relived some of our first dates and going to some of our favourite spots. When I started getting a little suspicious, Shehan threw me off and said we were just going to go watch the cricket at his place. I was so gutted! Later he told me there was a scavenger hunt on that evening for his work to win Ed Sheeran concert tickets (he was playing that night). I agreed to participate but I was feeling very confused at this point. Shehan sent me home to go get changed and wait for instructions. I sat at home very anxiously waiting for what was going to happen next. I finally get a call at 8pm (by this stage I knew something was up, Ed Sheeran started 30 mins ago!!) I get to the location just as the sun was setting over Auckland at one of our favourite spots. I see candles and lanterns lighting a pathway up the hill to where Shehan is standing at the top. I don’t even make it halfway before the tears start flowing. There’s Shehan standing with the gorgeous dog memes and one by one he shows a new one with all the reasons he loves me, then he gets down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was in disbelief and of course said yes. We then sat and had a gorgeous picnic dinner while the last of the sun disappeared and the candles lit the space around us. It was gorgeous and we sat there until after midnight just enjoying each others company and revelled in the excitement of getting engaged.
I love the laid back and relaxed style of their wedding day, and how this stylish couple has infused so much of what they love into their celebrations. From the sweet traditional wedding ceremony to the relaxed Cocktail style celebration. Also so cool that Allen Carbon took their wedding photos - he was our wedding photographer as well! (If that's not enough recommendation I'm not sure what is!)
I know you're going to love Allen's photos from this beautiful day
Our ceremony was held at St George’s Church in Epsom. A beautiful old wooden church and the perfect size for our guests. We didn’t add any decorations to the church except for one vase of flowers on the register table. We loved the look and feel of the church, there was no need to add anything else. Shehan and I wrote our own vows based off traditional christian vows. We didn’t share these with each other until the ceremony. Mine were so long that I decided to cut them down and write the rest in a card to Shehan which I gave to him the morning of the wedding with a gift. We loved how our ceremony went. Our celebrant (the husband of a friend of mine) was so awesome! He did such a good job and totally lead the service in such a relaxed and enjoyable way. We had the honour of my brother reading a poem and a dear friend reading a scripture. It was special to be able to have them part of the ceremony too.
For our reception, our goal was to have one big party! We didn’t go the traditional sit down dinner route, we wanted our guests to mix and mingle and not feel confined to one spot all night. This worked so well as we had a cheese and nibbles bar, drinks bar, Paella for dinner and a gelato cart for dessert as well as a cake table. Our guests were able to go eat and drink when they wanted to and sit and chat to who they wanted. One of my dear family friends, George, sang Jazz at the ceremony, she along with her band member Asher played an hour long set over the course of dinner and then later in the night a DJ joined us to get the dancing going. I don’t think I could have asked for it to go any better! We had the best time ever and had such amazing and positive responses from our guests.
Initially we were looking at a venue that was going to do everything for us, but we were going to need a large budget for that. We were also planning to buy a house the same year so I decided on a different approach which reduced our budget significantly but was still enough to allow an enjoyable and fun day/night. We could hire an empty venue, setup & pack down ourselves with help of family and friends. We chose an empty warehouse type space in Kingsland. It was perfect and I’m so stoked we went that route.
Huge thanks to Sophie and Shehan for sharing their special day with us
Thanks also to you! Thank you for reading this post, I hope you enjoyed all these gorgeous images.
